Working in Playhouse Square means we have limited options for a quick lunch within walking distance. So when Zaytoon Lebanese Kitchen opened in the former Huron Square Deli in July, we were thrilled. And it seems we’re not alone. We quickly learned to head here before noon so we don’t get caught up in the droves of other office workers in search of fresh, flavorful Middle Eastern food. They’re here, just like us, for the falafel rolled pita ($6), lentil soup ($4, cup) and tabbouleh salad ($6.50). We’re obsessed with the jalapeno hummus ($3.75, small). Rich and creamy, it has just a hint of heat that makes it all too easy to keep eating especially when slathered on fresh pita. For a lighter (and inexpensive) option, order the labneh manousheh ($2.75). The small flatbread packs plenty of flavor with just olives, tomato and fresh mint. But what has us sneaking out early for lunch is the beef shawarma rolled pita ($8). Piles of shaved beef tri-tip partner with crunchy pickled turnips, tomato, parsley and a house-made tahini sauce that’s got zing. It’s earned a spot in our lunch rotation.
