Jim King and his husband, Rafael Oletta, opened Angel Falls Coffee Co. in 1996 hoping to build off of Oletta's Venezuelan heritage. "We were one of the few coffeehouses in the entire country that served Venezuelan coffee," King says. Although coffee exports from Venezuela have ceased over the last 10 years due to politics, the shop — decorated with framed album covers, a single red treasure chest-turned-coffee table and a colorful array of well-worn couches and chairs — has kept its South American allure alive by creating blends from other countries on the continent, which they roast themselves about a mile away. Rafael's Blend ($13.95 per pound) is a mix of Colombian dark and espresso roasts while the Inca Trader ($13.95 per pound) is a mix of Guatemalan, Honduran and Colombian coffees. "In a lot of cases [South American coffee] is shade-grown," King says. "It gives it more of an island taste. It's a sweeter tasting coffee than Kenyan coffee which is sun-grown." Drink we love: The Cafe Con Leche ($3.30, small) is a semisweet concoction of organic Colombian espresso, condensed milk, brown sugar and spices. 792 W. Market St., Akron, 330-376-5282
