Three Summer Patios We Love
From Red Downtown's rooftop spot to Flying Cranes Cafe's luscious garden, here's where we'll be parked this summer.
Flying Cranes Cafe
For warmer weather, William Frye and his wife Kayoko Irie-Frye transformed their personal garden into the patio for their cafe. Tucking into dishes inspired by the couple’s native England and Japan, your lunchtime on the 50-seat patio surrounded by flowerbeds feels like a private garden party. “We have daffodils, tulips, peonies, perennial roses and more,” says Frye. “And we have a pergola with wisteria [flowers] that creates a perfect amount of shade for summer days.” 13006 Larchmere Blvd., Cleveland, 216-795-1033, flyingcranescafe.com
Il Rione Pizzeria
With only 16 seats, Il Rione might be small but its patio looks like it flew in from Italy. Located on the side of the brick restaurant, the space overtook the alley between the pizzeria and the neighboring building. Lights are strung above the area and the stenciled floor and antique decor complete the rustic look. “We wanted this to be a neighborhood spot,” says co-owner Brian Holleran. “We have seen customers who lose track of time when they sit out there — it’s tucked away enough to feel secluded, but open enough to still see the neighborhood.” 1303 W. 65th St., Cleveland, 216-282-1451, ilrionepizzeria.com
Red Downtown
While it might not be full-service, Red Downtown’s rooftop patio still has a killer bar menu that makes it an after-work and weekend destination. Its upscale vibe and clean, modern lines flow through from the restaurant downstairs. “Since our patio is rooftop, you don’t have that same noise you would at a street-level spot,” says general manager Stephanie Pack. “You’re elevated, which makes it a more relaxing way to see the city.” 417 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, 216-664-0941, redthesteakhouse.com
