If you plan your week around taco Tuesday, you’ll want to dedicate a day for its less portable cousin: the tostada. With tequila-tinged shrimp, caramelized onions, grilled green onions, roasted tomatoes and roasted garlic atop a toasted tortilla shell, the camarones tostadas ($12) at the new Nuevo Modern Mexican & Tequila Bar in North Coast Harbor might even make you rethink your weekly allegiance. “It covers a pretty big spectrum of flavors,” says co-owner Zack Hirt. “You’ve got the earthy of the tomatoes and onions, and the shrimp has a real nice sweetness.” But what makes this lunch special a standout is the restaurant’s house-made guacamole, which is spread on the tortilla before it’s toasted on a flattop grill. Made fresh every few hours using avocados, poblano peppers, onions, garlic and cilantro, the secret is a sprinkle of smoked sea salt. “It gives it that little extra flavor that you won’t find in most guacamole,” Hirt says. “We feel it works really well.” 1000 E.
