Braveheart comes to life at the 39th annual Ohio Scottish Games June 24 & 25 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds. President Margaret McCullough fills us in on this year’s event, aye?
Q: After 39 years, how do you keep it fresh?
A: This is our second year having grass-track bicycle racing. The bicycles have thin tires and no breaks at all, so you have to break by reducing your speed.
Q: What’s the most popular event?
A: Everyone wants to see the caber toss. It is a telephone pole that’s 65 pounds and 7 feet tall. They pick it up with both hands, steady it and tip it end over end with at least one rotation. And it’s all done in a kilt.
Q: Can kids compete?
A: For the kids’ caber toss, we have rug tubes that they can throw. We’ve got smaller stones for shot put too, and we usually do a tug-of-war for them and a foot race. All the kids get a ribbon for attending and participating, and a lot of them wear kilts.
