The women-focused theater company moves to Playhouse Square this summer.
It’s a woman’s world this summer as Mamai Theatre Co., armed with the mission of offering equal opportunities for women in theater, moves into Playhouse Square. The company with the Gaelic moniker for mother kicks off its fifth season June 8 and 9 with Love, Loss and What I Wore, a Nora and Delia Ephron production, and two classical plays that honor maternal heroines, including The Testament of Mary July 5-23. From Aug. 9-27, a local cast tackles a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House — the 1870s play that enlivens a Victorian doll who courageously slams the door on domestic life in the name of self-discovery. “It doesn’t feel dusty or dodgy at all,” says co-artistic director Christine McBurney. “It’s a timeless story that asks a bunch of questions: Can people be themselves and still be married? Are we sacrificing our egos for our jobs? It was very radical.” In the spirit of the play, Mamai offers mommy matinees July 16 and Aug. 20, marrying arts education for kids with a theater escape for moms. 1407 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 440-394-8353, mamaitheatreco.org
