Q: What should parents look for when choosing a quality school for their child?
A: “Parents should be considering the culture of the school,” says Christine Fowler-Mack, chief portfolio officer for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. “[Do they have] activities and course offerings that fit with the interests and needs of their students. They should be considering the school’s ability to articulate a plan for their school. Even just by visiting and asking the principal to tell you about their school, how they’ve organized learning and teaching, and what are some of the additional opportunities that they have in place to support students in their learning. Is the attendance strong at the school — or improving? We want to make sure we’re making the best choice for each student — that their needs, their interests, are going to be supported.”
