Q: Why are internships, co-ops and other experiential learning programs so important?
A: “It’s a chance for students to think about how they integrate the knowledge that they’ve been engaging in,” says J.R. Campbell, executive director of the design innovation initiative at Kent State University. “It’s collaborative and cross-disciplinary — being able to navigate in communities and situations that students maybe haven’t been in before or at least aren’t comfortable with. To be able to get some perspective and be able to communicate well within those environments are key skill sets that every employer needs. The format for experiential learning often works well for students that are otherwise struggling in the classroom in the more theory-based or traditional lecture learning styles.”Ask the Experts: Internships, Co-ops And Experiential Learning
