Q: What qualities should a student look for in a college choice?
A: “We encourage students to do college visits before they’re actually looking,” says Jennifer Beros, director of college counseling at University School. “They’ve got to check and see if the college offers them the best learning environment. It’s easy when people go on tours to get distracted by the beautiful buildings or the amazing facilities. Those are all wonderful, but remember, this is about a learning experience. The most important thing is, ‘Is this the right learning environment for me?’ When we’re making suggestions about colleges, [a student] will hear about a school they know nothing about. Take the time and listen. I don’t want people to miss the gems that are out there.”
