Duck, the Avon adhesive brand that helps a small committee of Avon residents coordinate the celebration each year, will hand out 1,000 rolls of free duct tape each day of the festival — that’s up from 500 rolls per day in years past. With at least 60 feet of duct tape at your disposal, the world is pretty much your waiting-to-be-covered-in-duct-tape oyster. And for some inspiration, this year’s festival brings you: pirates!
“This year, I’m most excited about the theme,” says festival communications manager Patti Sack. “No pun intended, it had legs.” (Arggh — we love bad pirate jokes as much as the next city magazine, Patti.)
Rather than one main tent housing the huge duct tape sculptures created for the event, this year the artwork will be spread throughout the park in the form of a treasure hunt: Find all the sculptures, get a letter at each one, unscramble the letters to form the secret answer, be entered to win a year’s supply of duct tape. Other swashbuckling festivities include pictures with your favorite pirate, a craft tent where you can turn yourself into a pirate (think duct tape eye patches and pirate flags) and a pirate-themed parade.
The duct tape gurus have even come up with a way to get your moody teenager involved: Festival goers can vote on their favorite duct tape prom outfits from the top 10 finalists in the Stuck At Prom scholarship contest.
