Sure, doughnuts may be the new “it” food. But the Becker brothers began serving their version back in 1946 — with the six boys eventually owning 13 shops in the Cleveland area. For Tommy Becker, the son of the youngest Becker brother, baking is in his blood. He took over the Fairview Park store from his father in 1996. “It just feels like a comfort feeling to do this stuff,” says Becker. “I don’t look at it as work.” Inside the cozy bakery, doughnuts and pastries fill a case as long as the room with old Becker family photos on the wall overhead. Whether you prefer your doughnuts yeast-raised, cream-filled or cake-like, Becker’s has them — as well as turnovers, bear claws, snuggles, kolacky and other tasty treats. Not much has changed since the store opened in 1957, and after one bite, you’ll understand why: There’s no reason to mess with something this good. “We have people that come in all the time that frequented the place when my dad first opened,” Becker says, who also owns an outpost in North Olmsted. “They pass it on to their children and their grandchildren.” 22088 Lorain Road, Fairview Park, 440-734-9856, beckers-donutsandbakery.com
Our Pick: You can’t beat a classic glazed doughnut ($1.10), but if you’re feeling adventurous, try a Russian tea biscuit ($2.59), which is filled with fruit and sprinkled with coarse sugar.
