As you head downtown to Winterfest on Nov. 24 for the kickoff of our city's holiday season, keep an eye out for the $125,000 GE Lighting donated to install new lampposts and energy-efficient LED lights on Public Square. "The addition of more businesses and consumers has also led to an increased element of concern about safety," GE Lighting president and CEO Maryrose Sylvester said during a September press conference announcing the donation. "One need — better lighting — was highlighted more than any other." GE Lighting also donated $80,000 to improve lighting at the West Side Market and the area surrounding it. Those upgrades were unveiled during the landmark's centennial celebration street festival and parade in October.
