Thrill-seekers and those looking to just chill can agree on one thing — Mohican State Park will make them both happy campers. Tucked into a deep gorge carved by the Clear Fork River, the park’s campground offers sites ($23- $43 per night) right alongside the river, providing not only views of the rugged terrain, but also easy access for tubing down the water.
“That’s probably the most popular activity for our campers,” says park manager Josh Gardner. “You have access right there to the river, you can tube or kayak or just play in it. It’s very beautiful in this part of Ohio, with the way glaciers carved out the gorge, melted and made for a very unique spot.” BYO tube or hit up a livery in nearby Loudonville for tube or canoe rentals.
If a relaxing float isn’t your speed, the rugged terrain has a popular single-track mountain biking trail rated “Epic” (the highest honor given by the International Mountain Biking Association), that takes you through heart-pounding heights and dense forest. Don’t have a bike? Before retiring to your campfire for the night, experience the scenery by lacing up your hiking boots and checking out the park’s foot trails, including the popular Lyons Falls Trail, which takes hikers past two waterfalls.
