No safari is complete without spending the night amongst the wild critters you’re observing, and the majestic beauty of the African plains is only a two-hour drive away for Clevelanders, thanks to the transportive power of The Wilds conservation center in Cumberland.
The Wilds’ Nomad Ridge is a luxurious respite that includes 12 private yurts ($329-$480 per night), each completed by an outdoor fire ring, king-, queen- or twin-size beds and a private observation deck perfect for spotting red-tailed hawks, herds of sable antelopes and more. “It’s like a really nice hotel room,” says Jan Ramer, vice president of the facility.
Guests can also enjoy ziplining, hiking and horseback riding, or take a tour across the reserve’s 10,000 acres of rolling fields, where giraffes, zebras, ostriches and more roam the plains. “What we’re known for is our large herds of livestock, many of which are endangered,” says Ramer. “We have one of the largest herds of southern white rhinos outside of Africa.”
