Equal parts sandwich shop, pizzeria and bar, this Highland Square restaurant is a one-stop-shop for a blockbuster lunch or dinner, catering to a variety of cravings. From its 2009 beginnings, Mr. Zub’s owner Mario Nemr wanted a spot that could serve a late-night crowd looking for a quick bite on the way home from the bar. He settled on sandwiches.
“When our food first started 10 years ago, it was geared toward late-night takeout,” he says. “We’re just used to doing that.” Offering 38 sandwich options named after some of his favorite movies and movie characters — think The Borat, a falafel-filled pita, or the Tommy Boy, a meatball sub — Nemr merged Mr. Zub’s with a nearby pizza shop and a bar in 2017, both of which he also owned. The menu grew to include pizzas, wings, fried chicken and 20 beers on tap, and Mr. Zub’s now offers growler fills to go.
But with all that change, it still satisfies the carryout crowd with its Hollywood inspired sandwiches and custom-order option. “There’s a lot of people who aren’t impressed or intrigued by the movie thing,” Nemr says. “They just want a Reuben, and we can do that.”
Try This: The Rocky Balboa ($7.99), a Philly cheesesteak complete with steak, onions, green peppers, provolone and mayo on a hoagie sub, is a so-messy-it’s-good treat.
