Dirty Dancing hits the Connor Palace Theatre March 3-22 with all the fancy footwork and music you loved from the movie. But why should Baby and Johnny be the only ones having the time of their lives? Viva Dance Studio's Rebecca Sweet steps us through the basics of the mambo.
First and foremost, you can't be self-conscious. Just let it go and start moving. First, what we do is weight transfers, or weight changing from one foot to the other. We get people moving forward and back. The leader starts with the left foot, the follower starts with the right foot. That's the mambo basic — that forward and back movement. The weight transfer is a good beginner exercise to get the body moving and sort of like march in place. And you move with the music; your steps should follow the beat — as told to Jason Brill
