Move over Fiona; it’s Lulu’s turn in the limelight.
Born Feb. 7 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, the Eastern Black rhino has grown into a 400-pound ball of adventurous and adorable energy garnering fast fans as she trots around her African Savanna outdoor habitat.
From rolling around in the mud like her mother, 14-year-old Kibibbi, to chomping on branches, the rambunctious rhino is helping draw attention to her threatened species. With fewer than 750 left in the wild, the Eastern Black rhino is critically endangered.
“Black rhinos are kind of the poster animals for illegal wildlife trade and trade in rhino horn,” says Travis Vineyard, animal curator at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. “Having a significant birth like a black rhino come along and have such a high public appeal is a huge opener for communication on the topic.”
