Water covers more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface, but the world’s population has a stressed relationship with its most vital resource. “Nothing can happen without water,” says Barbara Tannenbaum, curator of photography for the Cleveland Museum of Art. In Water: Edward Burtynsky, 13 large-scale images of our current water management strategies shot from above provide a new, in-depth look at our most precious resource across China, India, the Gulf of Mexico and more. As part of Cuyahoga50, a citywide commemoration of the last Cuyahoga River fire in 1969, this series asks us to analyze our achievements and how far we’ve yet to go. “Some of our water management systems have had horrific results,” says Tannenbaum. “Burtynski’s visual mastery really draws you in, but also encourages you to think about a more sustainable future.” 11150 East Blvd., Cleveland, 216-421-7350, clevelandart.org
