It’s a tall task to remake something as iconic and American as a hot dog. But that’s exactly what Matt and Emily Baber are doing with Wolf Boy Provisions. Their hormone-, antibiotic- and genetically modified organisms-free, all-beef hot dogs are made using beef from New Creation Farm in Chardon with a mix of spices and roasted fresh garlic and onions. The result is a snappy sausage that manages to be different while still being nostalgic and familiar.
Name Game: The couple first heard the term “wolf boy” in Sea Wolf’s song “You’re a Wolf.” Something about the phrase just stuck for Matt. “It embodied me,” he says. “My scruffy beard and attitude that I don’t want to grow up.”
Top Hits: Not just any toppings will do for this exceptional hot dog. The couple has experimented with making their own condiments: a spicy brown mustard, a yellow mustard and ketchup. But they have their own ideas of the perfect toppings. “I like mustard and a local kraut, while Matt likes slaw, cheese and chili,” says Emily.
Dog Pound: While getting their business off the ground at local events and farmers markets, the duo also made bacon and kielbasa alongside their hot dogs. But feedback led them to focus on just the dogs. “We heard someone scream, ‘This is the best hot dog ever,’” says Emily. 216-673-3618, wolfboyprovisions.com
