We love Tremont for its restaurants, galleries and funky vibe. But if you need a little extra inspiration to explore the neighborhood, let Dave Witzke and his bright cartoon murals of birds, cats and rabbits be your guide. “They bring vibrant, happy surprises to visitors and residents,” says Prosperity Social Club owner Bonnie Flinner, who organized a walking tour and social media contest based on his work. Through Oct. 31, post a selfie with one of the six murals and the #TSGTremont hashtag for a chance to win a monthly or grand prize. We asked Witzke about three of his favorites.
South Side: Witzke’s favorite mural was also his first in the neighborhood. “The birds are bright, vibrant colors,” he says. “It jumps off the wall.” 2207 W. 11th St.Prosperity Social Club: A former girlfriend’s 10-year-old son helped inspire the bird in a bird costume. “It’s demented but not too dark,” says Witzke. “It’s all bright colors, so no one’s really looking at it like that.” 1109 Starkweather Ave.
La Bodega: Birds stacked at strange angles frame a bird dressed as a fish. The green backdrop gives it a mock forest for camouflage. But if you know where to look, it can be seen from the road. “It’s kind of like a hidden gem,” Witzke says. 869 Jefferson Ave.
