Clevelanders of a certain age who grew up with The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges will instantly remember the train conductor who hosted the TV shows and his parting words of wisdom to children.
“When you hear old songs on the radio, it doesn’t have the same effect. They never really went out of style. But when you hear the first few words of an old advertisement or show, it takes you right back,” says Cleveland expat Dan O’Shannon.
He has spent countless hours sifting through old reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes and anything else for vintage sounds. He calls himself a “Cleveland audio archeologist,” and he’s rescued hundreds of clips that would have otherwise disappeared.
When he unearthed the Captain Penny audio, O’Shannon, 47, had not heard that signoff since he was a kid. He put the sound bite on a compilation, which is now sold as Cleveland Memory Grenade at The Only Cleveland Store in Tower City. You’ll get lost — maybe overwhelmed — in the nostalgia.
