Local coffee shops, such as Phoenix Coffee Co., are brewing up new ways to reach their customers at home. The local chain, which has six locations in Northeast Ohio, started offering bike deliveries of whole coffee beans and pour-over equipment in March. Barista Stephen Shaum (pictured) worked with management to develop the bike courier system, putting his 12 years of cycling experience to good use. “There’s something unique about having a cycle courier,” says Shaum. “Seeing someone on a bike is very indicative that the outside world is still here.”
Customers can order six kinds of coffee blends, whole or ground, such as the single-origin Fugi Rwanda ($15) with notes of sweet orange, lemon and cherry, or the Specialty Instant Coffee ($12) from Guatemala. Shaum started out dedicating two days a week each to the East Side and West Side. His courier service has now become a permanent part of the company’s operations with expanded delivery to Avon, Cleveland Heights and more. “It gives us a chance to present ourselves in a different way,” says Shaum.
