Expect your appointment to last a few hours. "It's not something anybody wants to do," says Goss. "But it's more fun to plan now." Traditional plots range from $1,500 to $6,295 but can be broken into flexible payment plans. "The thing about selling cemetery space is it's always here," says Goss. "If someone were to make payments and suddenly couldn't, we can either save it for them until they get back on track, or we can turn it over."

Lake View's garden setting allows families to create their own sectioned-off space in the cemetery's recently developed eastern sections by adding shrubbery or benches as boundary markers. "We always say, 'The space is going to pick the client,' " says Goss. "There's something that grabs them." Honorably discharged veterans can secure a plot for free in section 59 or for a discounted rate elsewhere. "It's a total personal choice," says Goss.

You'll need a headstone that commemorates you and your family. Johns-Carabelli Co. has been creating headstones, memorials and monuments for nearly as long as Lake View has been around. Today, it still creates lasting, personalized memorials such as one of two bronze little boys peering over a granite wall, meant to symbolize a memory from a family's swimming pool. "They know how gravestones would look relative to the surrounding monuments," says Goss.
