"Speaking of songs that I'm sick and tired of," chuckles Eddie Reyes, founder and guitarist of Taking Back Sunday, one of the more influential bands of the punk/post-hardcore scene that broke out in the early 2000s.
He's referring to the single "You're So Last Summer" from the band's 2002 debut album Tell All Your Friends. "What is that song about? I have no idea. Probably some sh--ty thing that a girl did. It's about a break-up, and I wasn't involved, but it makes for a great song."
It's also an issue often faced by bands that have been together for a long time.
"You don't love every old song you wrote. There's a couple of them that I think are completely silly, but I know other people love them and respect them," says Reyes, who relocated to Huron, Ohio, eight years ago. "You gotta make people happy. These people are the reason you are who you are."
The band kicks off their fall tour at the House of Blues Oct. 4, reviving Tell All Your Friends in its entirety to celebrate the album's 10-year anniversary.
"It's cool that so many old bands are getting back together and [playing old albums]," says Reyes. "It's nostalgic."
And even in spite of those few tracks they may have outgrown, the band is enjoying the chance to relive old memories and reconnect with fans from the past. It's also why Tell All Your Friends will always stand out for Reyes among the group's five albums.
"It's like children. You love them all the same. There's just a couple traits that you hate about all of them," says Reyes only semi-facetiously. "But this one will always have a special place in my heart because it did make us who we are. It influenced us to keep doing what we were doing."
