Blood, gore, rock 'n' roll and laughter. What more could one want? Not much, according to Dan Folino, who stars in the Beck Center's musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson opening May 25. "The [special] effects are going to be fun to watch," Folino says of the show, which has no shortage of staged violence. "It's going to be an experience."
Q| Do you have a favorite scene? The scene with Andrew and his wife, where he's cutting himself, and then he's cutting her, and they're bleeding into a basin together. This really kind of romantic song is playing while it's happening. I love stuff like that, when the music suggests one thing, and the action is something completely different.
Q| What makes this musical different? The music. Everybody is writing rock musicals now, but all they're really doing is adding an electric guitar to the orchestra pit. There aren't a whole lot of shows that actually sound like rock •n' roll. I'm a rocker at heart, so that's a big appeal to me.
Q| How does Andrew Jackson's life relate to punk rock? He's really the most rock 'n' roll president that we've ever had. He was a badass, and he really marched to his own beat. If you imagine a really famous rock 'n' roll star and what they are like in real life, the vanity, the self-destructive nature and all of that — that's who he was.
