It’s the ’80s in small-town Louisiana. The hair is big, the temperatures are rising, and the gossip is abundant. Written by Robert Harling and based on his relationship with his mother and sister, Steel Magnolias is a heartwarming homespun tale that follows three generations of women discussing marriage, death, sex, friendship and sisterhood at their sacred weekly gathering place: Truvy’s beauty parlor. The precursor to the 1989 smash movie starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field and Julia Roberts closes Cleveland Play House’s centennial season and runs through Aug. 21. “These women grow and blossom over the course of the play,” says director Laura Kepley, “with friendships tested and strengths challenged, [it’s] a tale of finding and fulfilling your life’s calling and the bond of female friendships.” Allen Theatre, 1407 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216-241-6000, playhousesquare.org
