It's all about curb appeal. So since 1983, the city of Cleveland has worked with business owners to use rebate and loan programs to help finance storefront renovations.
"Your commercial retail district is like the front door of your home," says Terri Sandy, manager of the storefront renovation program. "You need your retail main street to be attractive."
In 2010, the city completed 51 projects, including exterior rehabilitations, parking lot improvements and new signage. The program — for which city employees assist with design plans, find contractors and secure funding — aims to help 50 other businesses spruce up their properties this year.
"It changes the perception people have of their neighborhood," Sandy says. Here are three signs that caught our eye.
SI SENOR MEXICAN RESTAURANT, 16800 Lorain Ave.
Located in Kamm's Corners, the restaurant is one of many revitalized spots in the neighborhood. It opened in the former Kilbane's Pub space last April. Sign Language: The sombrero-and-poncho-themed sign, which was designed by the city, says "stay a while," just like the welcoming neighborhood. Shop Talk: "It's pretty awesome," says manager William Alarcon. "Some customers come in and say 'Wow, that's really good work.' "
ZDARA, 1382 W. Ninth St.
The Mediterranean restaurant opened last June in the former Sunset Lounge location in the Warehouse District. Sign Language: Because the restaurant is known for its kabobs, general manager Fadi Daoud wanted a skewer worked into the contemporary sign, which the city helped design. Shop Talk: "We love the 'Z' going through the other letters," he says.
TITANS GYM & TITAN UP CAFÉ, 619 Prospect Ave.
"There was no sign whatsoever," says manager Steve Armstrong of his gym, which opened last May in the building that also houses Zinc Bistro, Caddy Shack Sports Lounge and the Wyse advertising firm. Sign Language: The sign mixes the trim lettering of the company's logo with a strong Roman column to suggest how you'll look after a few workouts. Shop Talk: "It's great, especially when it's all lit up at night," he says.
