It's hard to believe that Tim Meadows, who performed on Saturday Night Live from 1991 to 2000, was once a nervous young SNL cast member. "I was intimidated when I first got there, because guys like Dana [Carvey] and Mike [Myers] were so great," he says. "I enjoyed all my time there, and I'm still pretty close with Chris Rock and Adam Sandler." We chat with Meadows before he reunites with kooky SNL vets Jon Lovitz and Rob Schneider for a Nov. 6 performance at the Akron Civic Theatre.
Q. What's it like playing Kevin One, a gay father, on new NBC show Marry Me?
A. My husband is named Kevin also. As soon as I started doing my scenes with Dan Bucatinsky [Kevin Two], we realized we had an instant chemistry. We have the same demeanor. It's a very smart, funny and quick-paced sitcom.
Q. You started out doing improv with Second City. How different is stand-up?
A. When I started doing it four or five years ago, part of my trepidation was that there would be no barrier between me and the audience. It's just you, your ideas and the audience. For the first five minutes, your fame and history is what your audience is digging. After that you're on your own. It's the purest form of comedy, and it's very rewarding.
Q. What's your favorite moment with Jon Lovitz?
A. Jon taught me how to throw a Frisbee. Growing up in Detroit, I had never thrown one. Me, Jon and David Spade went to Central Park, and they were both really good. It was really embarrassing for me because there were a lot of people looking at us. I haven't thrown a Frisbee since.
