Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage education director Jeffery Allen pitches us two can't-miss artifacts tied to the museum's Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American exhibit, which runs through Sept. 7.
Esther Schimmel's Jacket
In the 1940s, Schimmel opened a hot dog stand across from the St. Louis baseball stadium. While the hot dogs weren't kosher, she found ways to maintain her faith by wearing a jacket to keep from coming in contact with them. "Her jacket is part of the exhibit in all of its mustard-stained glory," Allen says.
1903 World Series Contract
One of Allen's favorite items is the contract from the first World Series in 1903 with a handwritten addendum stating that no player can be on a World Series team if they are not on the roster by September — a rule still enforced today. "I love the fact that it was a handwritten afterthought," Allen says.
