You can’t see athletes throw telephone poles up to 10 feet or toss 100-pound bales of hay over a pole vault bar at just any festival.
After 41 years, people still flock to the Lorain County Fairgrounds to see feats of strength at the Ohio Scottish Games. This year president Margaret McCullough hopes to add a new sport, one even older than the caber toss: tug-of-war.
Those looking for something more low-key can grab a pint and settle in at one of three entertainment venues featuring highland dancing, Celtic rock and traditional Scottish music.
“To open the games, we have as many pipe bands as we can get our hands on, and we honor all the clans that come out,” says McCullough. “We had 25 pipe bands last year all playing in unison. That was really something.”
