memory lane
"The May Co. was the biggest of the six department stores that existed in the city, and we worked plenty hard. The store was open six days and two nights a week — there was no thought of 40-hour weeks. Christmas season didn't start until after Thanksgiving. It was extraordinary — we would open the doors, and there would be masses of people waiting to get in. The salespeople all had to wear coats and ties, and it was beastly hot from all the crowds."
