Lockdown has offered ample time to rekindle old hobbies and search around for rare finds. Over the past year, the trading card industry exploded with activity. With more and more cards coming through his Akron store, Full Grip Games owner Jameson Reeves shares the three rarest cards that he’s seen over the past year.
Pokemon: First-edition Charizard
The iconic fire-breathing dragon Charizard has always been the most sought-after card in the game. First-edition cards in good condition are incredibly expensive — Reeves bought this card for $30,000. “[Kids] aren’t like ‘Oh man, this card is going to be worth X amount of dollars in 20 years,” Reeves says.
Pokemon: Gold Star Mewtwo
Unlike other trading card games, only half of a Pokemon card’s value is in its playability. The other half is its collectability. This Mewtwo is the best of both worlds and can be sold for up to $1,000 depending on its condition. “This card is in mint condition, which is very rare,” Reeves says.
Magic: The Gathering: White-Bordered Black Lotus
Valued at $10,000 to $15,000, this card from the Magic Unlimited set is not only collectible, but still playable today. “I think there’s a little bit more lore around [this card] just because it’s probably one of the most powerful cards in the game,” Reeves says.
