Mark Mothersbaugh was legally blind until he was diagnosed with myopia or extreme nearsightedness in second grade. When he first put his glasses on, the whole world came into focus. That event inspired the lead singer of Devo's retrospective exhibit, Myopia, at both the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland and Akron Art Museum from Memorial Day weekend to Aug. 28. "Devo is short for devolution," says Megan Lykins Reich, MOCA deputy director. "This notion of how things grow and devolve is something he's long been interested in." At MOCA, Mothersbaugh examines our culture through manipulated sound in works such as Orchestrions (pictured), which are makeshift instruments fashioned from organ pipes and plumbing materials that will play an original composition for Cleveland. "Mark's created a sound that's never been heard before," says Lykins Reich. 11400 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216-421-8671, mocacleveland.org
