There are at least two Tribe fans living in the San Francisco Bay area, courtesy of former Clevelander Scott Willis. We called Willis one of our most interesting people in 1982, back when he was a baby-faced 24-year-old editorial cartoonist with a bright future ahead of him. “[Willis] is emerging as one of the best young talents in the country,” we wrote. So when the Press folded that summer, Willis hit the road.
He spent three years penning political cartoons for the Dallas Times Herald and 15 for the San Jose Mercury News. In 2000, he went out on his own with Scott Willis Murals. His company specializes in children’s murals for businesses and private residences. He and his wife, Patricia Patterson, have two boys who are “die-hard Tribe fans”: Andrew, 19, and Dan, 18.
“I loved working with the staff at the Cleveland Press — [it was] a terrific group of dedicated journalists who cared deeply about the city and its people,” he says. “Cleveland politics: Never a dull moment, and never a shortage of things to draw about.”
