We were fans of disturbing covers. Call it the Time Magazine syndrome: If you create a controversial cover, they will buy. We’ve featured Cleveland’s homicide unit, guns in hand (1974); an atom bomb demolishing the city (1982); and a horrifying sketch of murderer Milan Vukelich in a “Friday the 13th” costume (1988). The little boy staring out of this September 1992 cover marked our last foray into violence. Since then, the craziest we’ve gotten is the nude mom we ran in 1995. (Look closely — she’s not wearing a wedding band. Boy, did we get letters!)
