Pet psychiatrists, pet spas — really, we should have seen this one coming.
For the past year, seamstress Kathy Perich has been sewing custom-made dog clothing at her Akron pet store/boutique, The Pet’s Pajamas. She’s created everything from a pink evening gown for a bulldog to a red rose costume for a cocker spaniel.
Some ensembles can cost $100 or more, depending upon the clothing design and size of your pooch. Perich will even stitch something for that feline fashionista in your life, though she warns, “cats usually don’t like to wear clothes.”
Dogs must be more understanding, as Perich’s store is stocked with its own ready-to-wear line of clothing that includes frilly holiday dresses, miniature Mexican ponchos and, you guessed it, pet pajamas. If you’re just in the market for a Halloween getup for your best friend, the store stocks Superman and Elvis costumes, as well as padded hotdog buns that’ll turn your dachshund into, well, a hotdog.
Perich says most costumes are cut for tiny dogs, but there are options for larger breeds, including Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes doggie jerseys and jackets. Perich even carried Pittsburgh Steelers items last fall.
“We didn’t go so far as to sell University of Michigan stuff,” she assures. “We thought we’d get killed.”
