Given the state of the music industry, it’s tough for a live club to keep its doors open. But if there’s one that deserves to survive, it’s the shrine to loud amps and cold PBR known as the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern. It turns 10 the weekend of March 5 and 6. We asked co-owner Cindy Barber what’s on tap for the occasion.
Pere Ubu March 5, Ballroom, 8 p.m. $20. The legendary experimental rock act will perform its breakthrough 1978 album The Modern Dance in its entirety. “They’ve done it in Europe, but this will be the first time they’re doing it in the states.”
This Moment in Black History/Sun God March 5, Tavern, 8:30 p.m., $5. Cleveland’s This Moment in Black History and Sun God will perform at this party for a new Smog Veil Records release featuring both bands. “[Chicago-based Smog Veil] has been putting out all these Cleveland releases. The whole night will have this Cleveland garage-rock feel to it.”
Roky Erickson March 6, Ballroom, 8 p.m., $30. The storied, psychedelic-rock pioneer returns after performing at last year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to Janis Joplin. “I’ve been going to Austin, [Texas], forever for [the] South by Southwest [music festival] and have long heard the tale of Roky Erickson. We’ve been trying to bring him up here for a really long time.”
