For only the second time since the Browns returned nearly a quarter of a century ago, they started the season 1-0.
Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium, they host the New York Jets, trying to go 2-0 and to plant a flag that this season is not a lost one with quarterback Deshaun Watson suspended for the first 11 games.
Here are some numbers to wrap your brain around going into the game.
1993
That is the last time the Browns started a season 2-0. Who were the coach and quarterback? (Humming Jeopardy’s theme music now.) Bill Belichick, before he was a genius coach, and Bernie Kosar, before he was released in the middle of that season. The Browns started 3-0 in 1993, but after cutting Kosar, they stumbled and finished 7-9, missing the playoffs.
60
Steve Cox kicked one that many yards in 1984, the longest field goal in Browns history. Kicker Cade York quickly became a fan favorite for kicking the longest field goal by a rookie in his first NFL game when he made a 58-yarder last week in the 26-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
-6.5
The Browns are the favorites to beat the Jets. The Jets got blasted last week by the Ravens 24-9. Their coach Robert Saleh is 4-13 as a head coach in the league. The Jets are also without their top quarterback, Zack Wilson.
17-3
That is Jets quarterback Joe Flacco’s career record against the Browns. That damage was done when he was a member of the Baltimore Ravens.
217
That is how many yards the Browns rushed for in their Week 1 victory. Nick Chubb accounted for 144 of those, averaging more than six yards per carry. If they can rush for more than 200 yards, they will win far more weeks than they lose.
