Hundreds of students, staff, parents and community members gathered this morning at Cleveland Public Auditorium to celebrate the success of the football team which finished its season last weekend at 15-0, bringing home the Division IV state championship and the first championship won by a team in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
The celebration brought together Clevelanders to celebrate in the red-and-black clad auditorium. Outside, a motorcade welcomed in the festivities and the team, while inside, Cleveland Cavaliers On-Court Host Ahmaad Crump led the celebration that included dance moves from The Cavs PowerHouse, Scream Team, Sir CC and some of Glenville’s own students.
Crump introduced each member of the winning team, concluding with head coach, Ted Ginn Sr., who led the team to victory.
“It’s definitely bigger than football. They brought a community together,” says Crump. “This is absolutely history in the making. There’s a movie out, I’m pretty sure everybody’s seen it. It’s called Remember the Titans. Sooner or later, our story is going to be national with Glenville right here.”
Speakers for the event included Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon, players, and several members of Cleveland City Council who all congratulated and honored the team on this milestone accomplishment.
“This team has made everybody proud,” said Bibb. “Coach Ginn said ‘If we win this city’s first ever football state championship, we will show Cleveland what greatness looks like.’”
Bibb concluded with a message to the team that will carry it not just through the rest of its celebration, but through to following football seasons where the group aims to keep making history.
“Don’t let anyone tell you you cannot achieve your God-given potential,” he said. “Keep showing up. Keep showing out. And keep making our state proud.”
