Jackie Robinson, Tris Speaker and Babe Ruth all played at the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 66th Street — but never on a field like this. League Park, the former home of the Cleveland Spiders, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Buckeyes from 1891 to 1950, reopens in mid-to-late July after a $6.3 million makeover that includes a new artificial turf. Fitted to its original, quirky dimensions (it’s 460 feet in center field and just 290 feet in right field), League Park will whisper to the past as it hosts high school and adult league games. “We put the home plate the same place where Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run,” says Michael Cox, Cleveland’s director of public works. “Just think of the significance of that.”
