If February leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy about true love, know that Jay Hobbs is doing his part for the forces of good. The owner of Perfect Proposal helps develop elaborate plans for popping the question. "The guy is already entering into a very nerve-racking situation," he says. "So the proposal has to be organic and honest." Three years and nearly 150 proposals later, we asked Hobbs for three of the most memorable.
The Labyrinth // Breakfast with champagne, fondue and a massage was just the start of a 25-room labyrinth Hobbs helped a Cleveland attorney plan for his girlfriend in the penthouse of a Cleveland hotel. Her entire family was waiting in the last room, and the plan culminated with a private rooftop proposal. "She knew something was going to happen but she didn't know when," Hobbs says. "The key is to provide suspense."
Care Bears on Ice // One couple's date at the ice-skating rink turned into a synchronized flash mob thanks to Hobbs. First, he had the boyfriend make an exit then put a song on the loudspeakers. Two people began to dance, then five, then 20. "She was looking around like, What's going on here?" Nearly 100 people joined in before the boyfriend and two friends skated out in Care Bear costumes ("She had a Care Bear since she was really young," explains Hobbs). He then popped the question in front of the entire rink.
Falls Guys // A Cleveland banker wanted to emulate the day he met his girlfriend at Niagara Falls but a little closer to home. Hobbs had him take her on a carriage ride around historic Chagrin Falls, while his team swiftly decorated the village's downtown falls area with vases, candles and flower petals, disappearing from site just before the couple arrived. "We prefer the James Bond approach," Hobbs says. "We save the day from behind the scenes."
