There won't be any parades or fireworks, but for one weekend in August, kids and their parents will have reason to celebrate. Ohio's one-time sales tax holiday Aug. 7-9 exempts all clothing priced under $75 and school supplies and school instructional materials less than $20 from sales tax. We sent a Cleveland mother and her daughter out on a tax-free shopping spree to see how far each could stretch $50.

Total Bill Without Tax: $50 for 24 items Game Plan: "I told myself that I wouldn't spend more than $5 on a single item. We said we couldn't come back to a store after we checked out, so before I put anything in my basket, I pulled out my phone and checked the other stores' prices." Best Deal: "Three pencil pouches, a pencil sharpener and a pack of erasers cost only a penny each at OfficeMax." Splurge: "I broke my own $5 rule and bought a box of paper clips, push pins and other desk supplies for a dollar more, because it was way too cute to pass up."
Total Bill Without Tax: $49.99 for 18 items Game Plan: "This was spur-of-the-moment shopping, so we didn't clip coupons ahead of time, but we downloaded a bunch of cost-savings apps on our phones while we were cruising the aisles. Using the Target Cartwheel app alone saved me almost $7." Best Deal: "At about $4, the Yoobi mini highlighters weren't exactly cheap, but for each school supply purchased, the company donates an item to a U.S. classroom in need." Splurge: "The black-and-white striped skirt ate up almost half of my budget, but who could walk away from that skirt?"
