What would have held our morning newspaper wrapped so tightly for all those years if not the simple, reliable rubber band? As the University of Akron celebrates the 100th anniversary of the world’s first rubber chemistry course (offered at the university’s forerunner, Buchtel College), the stretchy hoop gets its due. A $10,000 savings bond is waiting for the fifth- through eighth-grader who comes up with the best invention using rubber bands. The university is co-hosting the contest with The Akron Global Polymer Academy and the American Chemical Society’s Rubber Division. Stretch those minds, kids. The deadline is Nov. 14.
