Rocking a personalized No. 30 Cleveland Browns jersey and a dog mask, Denny “Dog Face” Kochever, has been sitting in the section behind the eastern end zone (at FirstEnergy Stadium and Cleveland Municipal Stadium before it) since before it was even called “the Dawg Pound.” Kochever breaks down how to make the most of sitting in the notorious section and why it might not deserve the rabid rep it gets.
Go, Team, Go!
Kochever admits it’s unlikely players can really hear most of the chants and cheers coming from the stands. But classics such as, “Here We Go, Brownies, Here We Go,” get the crowd amped up, and that’s what matters. “We want them to get yelling, get up on their feet,” Kochever says. One of his favorite cheers? “Hit him in the right knee! Hit him in the left knee! Hit him in the wienie! Touchdown!”
Be Cool
Kochever says no matter how excited you get, be nice to people around you, even if they’re (gasp!) rooting for the other team. “They’re here just like you are,” he says. And while he knows fans can use colorful language at games, he wants people to be aware of any families with kids sitting in the section. “If I hear ‘F this’ or ‘F that,’ I will say, ‘We got a family down here. Can you watch it a bit?’ ” he says.
Dress the Part
While Kochever doesn’t expect every fan in the Dawg Pound to go all out like he and some of the section’s other diehards do with masks and more, he does have one simple request: “Wear some brown and orange!” He jokes that one time a fellow fan he knows well wore a green coat to a game against the New York Jets because it was his warmest coat. “I don’t care if it’s your warmest coat or not,” he says. “Put a shirt over your coat!”
