In his younger days, Brad Turner would play a homemade, celebrity-based trivia game with friends and family. Two years ago, he and co-worker David Cockley designed a polished, portable version and called it Celebritease.
The only problem was they couldn't find anybody in our Angry Birds-loving world who wanted to take a chance on a new game that didn't involve a controller or a smartphone.
"We licked our wounds for a little bit," Turner says. "Then we came back and said, 'Let's just do it anyway.' "
Turner and Cockley founded a company called Communications Factory and launched the game themselves, selling it for $19.99 on Amazon.com.
A blend of Charades and Trivial Pursuit, the game divides players into teams of two and asks one member to select one of 216 chips containing a celebrity name, which the player then tries to communicate to his or her partner without saying the first or last name.
The idea is to correctly identify as many celebrities as possible within each 60-second round. Each correct answer ranges from 10 to 30 points based on difficulty, and wild-card chips offer players a second chance when their partners are stumped by a particular celebrity.
It's fun, it's social, and you don't have to be a TMZ junkie to rack up big points.
"It's not going to compete with the PlayStations of the world, and we don't want it to," Turner says. "It's just one of those simple, fun and affordable games."
