Don't be surprised to see lotuses and downward-facing dogs in Tremont's Lincoln Park on weekend mornings this summer.
Yoga Rocks the Park is once again bringing summer-season sessions to the city's near West Side on select Saturdays and Sundays through September. Produced by Denver-based Open Sky Marketing, Cleveland is one of 13 cities in the company's nationwide effort to bring live-music-and-yoga gatherings to public parks.
Co-directors Emily Miller and Andy Holland are drawing on area yoga instructors to lead the classes in Lincoln Park. The Studio Cleveland's Lyz Bly, who counts Vinyasa power flow yoga (a fast-paced style designed for fitness and weight loss) among her specialties, will teach the first class of this month on July 13.
"Being able to sweat out toxins and the emotional baggage we carry around is a great feeling," Bly says. "I've noticed in my classes recently that many of my students come for a workout rather than a slow, easy experience."
The rock duo Rossi and Romano will perform after the 10 a.m. yoga session. Kids can take part in a free yoga class at 11:15 a.m.
Holland stresses that Yoga in the Park is for everyone, regardless of one's previous experience or fitness level. "We want the person who's thinking about trying it, as well as the 20-year yogi to come out and join us in the park."
