Superscript Comics and Games is a bright new store tucked into a quiet, unassuming corner of Lakewood. Looks for game nights and other events after its grand opening July 3, as well as an expanded online store. Christine and Elliott Frank paired up with friend and business partner Nick Kratsas to open the community-focused shop. “We want to provide an atmosphere where everybody feels welcome,” says Elliott Frank. “[Where] everybody feels like it’s a place they can be and exist and explore the stories and games that they want to explore and feel like they’re surrounded by people who support them.” Here’s three things to know about the new comic book shop.
It’s A Welcoming Place (Even Virtually). Check the store’s calendar for game nights from beginner to advanced and watch for a virtual comic book club coming soon. “Going forward, once we’re able to invite more people into the store, we have ideas for social game nights,” says Kratsas. “[And] workshops, whether it’s maybe a workshop for painting miniatures, or how to run a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, or also things that would feature local authors or comic book artists or game designers.”
Find Indie Voices Here. Indie game designers and publishers are at the forefront of Superscript’s inventory. They feature diverse games and authors, including LGBTQ stories from companies such as Black Mask Studios. “One of the things we wrote in stone very early on is we don’t want to be the store that just has an indie section, or local section,” says Elliott Frank. “We want to push that stuff…we want to apply our energy to it.”
Go Beyond Your Faves. While you can have your fave recurring comic book held for you monthly, the knowledgeable staff is ready and willing to get you hooked on other titles and genres. “You want to be able to provide people with stuff that they might not encounter anywhere else,” says Elliott Frank. “They can have that kind of record shop experience where they walk in and say, ‘Hey I liked this, what else am I going to dig?’ and you can say there’s something you would have probably not discovered.”
