"When it was in town on Labor Day weekend, Cleveland was the focus of the world. There would be 80,000 to 90,000 people all along the airport and more sitting on barn roofs to watch the planes. The pilots for the transcontinental races started in California. The women's air derby pilots had virtually no navigational aids — they used Rand McNally road maps. Some of them ended up in Mexico. Roscoe Turner was a popular pilot and he let me sit in his racing plane. He said, "Now kid, don't touch anything.' "
