Cleveland transit system
To great fanfare, a new carrier was taking off from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. A 1968 ad in The Plain Dealer exhorted travelers to "Fly CTS" — the Cleveland Transit System, which had extended its heavy rail Red Line from Windermere to the Terminal Tower out to the airport. It was the first Rapid transit in the Western Hemisphere that linked downtown to a city's international airport. Running since 1913, the first light rail trains left Terminal Tower in 1930 — but only heading east on the current Green and Blue lines. Today, the Red Line has more than 6.2 million riders, and local artists are making the view more enjoyable by adding murals along the route for the Republican National Convention in July.
