If you’re anything like us, your summer beach bod could use a little ferociousness. Whether your fitness level is most like a house cat, bobcat or lion, Tim Kelly, founder of running and exercise group Run Wild CLE, has a workout to tap into your animal instincts.
House cat: Suicides
Build speed and agility with this exercise that involves sprinting 10 yards, sprinting back, then sprinting 20 yards and back — all without stopping. Make it wild: Grab a workout partner and take turns holding a plank while the other person sprints. “If you take too long, your partner could always pay you back by taking their time during their suicide,” Kelly says.
Bobcat: Burpees
This grueling strength-building exercise involves rapidly and repeatedly dropping into a pushup position, doing a pushup, and then jumping back up to a standing position. Make it wild: Build your bod on the beach by doing burpees in the sand. “It’s a little harder [because the sand is loose],” Kelly says. “And you are getting sand everywhere and getting dirty.”
Lion: Stairs
Whether it’s running the 20 stairs at home or the 155 Fort Hill steps at Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation, this workout whips your lower body and core into shape. Make it wild: Try skipping every other step as you run or jump with both feet from one stair to the next. “That will work a new muscle group and tends to tire people out a lot quicker,” Kelly says.
